Problems and Solutions
Problem: So you want whiter whites, softer linens, stain and odor free clothes? Who doesn't? It seems everyday there is a new laundry product promising all of these things, but what does it cost you and the environment? Whiter whites mean more chlorine bleach and optical brighteners. Softer linens mean more quaternary ammonia. Having your clothes smell like the first day of spring means more artificial fragrance. With nearly one percent of the population allergic to synthetic fragrances, this can be a nightmare. Many laundry products contain most of these ingredients including: metasilicates, borax, free silica, cationic fabric softeners, petrochemical surfactants, toxic algaecides and sanitizers, artificial fragrance and coloring, and fillers. When you are washing your clothes with these kinds of products, you are wearing them against your skin all day, absorbing any left over residue your wash did not rinse away. Most laundry products are so packed with fillers that it becomes difficult to rinse everything out. Water can only dissolve so much. This can also be hard on your clothes, washing machine and dryer, leaving residues behind that builds up over time you wash causing corrosion of washing machines and dryers, and fading and thinning of clothes. Phosphates cause eutraphocation in water systems, creating algae blooms that can suffocate marine ecosystems. High pH laundry formulations corrode machines and destroy the fibers in fabrics.

Problem: Phosphates cause eutraphocation in water systems, creating algae blooms that can suffocate marine ecosystems, too many phosphates in the water can make the water too soft causing it to corrode dishware. High pH dishwashing formulations corrode machines and dishware as well. Many automatic dishwashing products are highly corrosive. Artificial fragrances are used in many hand-dishwashing liquids. With one percent of the population allergic to synthetic fragrances and a growing number developing sensitivities, this can cause all kinds of reactions for skin and respiratory systems. EDTA is slow to biodegrade and attracts heavy metals.

Problem: Most of us have been conditioned to believe that they must use powerful chemical disinfectants such as bleach, pine and ammonia cleaners to really clean. The truth is, hazardous disinfectants are not necessary to effectively clean. Even if you used a disinfectant to clean with, you can not completely sterilize every surface in your home or the air. Chemical disinfectants only temporarily clean with long term, hazardous effects to you and the environment. The most common chemical used to kill bacteria are phenol (a particularly hazardous class of chemicals), quaternary ammonia, pine oil, and sodium hypochlorite, otherwise known as chlorine bleach. Using chlorine bleach is particularly hazardous because they react with ammonia or acids to release toxic gases. There are thousands of accidents each year caused from mixing bleach with other cleaning products. These are all corrosive and toxic chemicals.
Biokleen Solutions: Clean effectively so you can eliminate or reduce disinfectant by removing the food source with Biokleen All-Purpose Cleaner and Biokleen Spray & Wipe.
Problem: Solvents, glass cleaners, and all purpose cleaners usually come in a spray bottle and dissolve dirt without scrubbing. The reason they can do that is because they usually contain glycol ethers or chlorine bleach. These are strong and hazardous chemical which is used in most of today's bathroom cleaners for mold and mildew. The warning label may read something like this, "Not recommended for use by persons with heart conditions or chronic respiratory problems". "Do not mix with acids, ammonia or other household cleaners". "Use only in well ventilated areas". “Hazardous/Fatal When Swallowed” What are glycol ethers? Glycol Ethers have been known to cause birth defects in laboratory animals. They can damage red blood cells or bone morrow, causing anemia. And using these products in small confined spaces, such as bathrooms, makes some inhalation of glycol ether inevitable. Like chlorine bleach, it is readily taken in and absorbed through the skin, even when no damage to the skin itself occurs (that is why you can taste a lot of these products in your mouth). There are a variety of toilet bowl cleaners marked DANGER. Many contain strong acids and are toxic and corrosive. They can burn skin and eyes on contact.

Problem: Nobody likes to get a clogged drain, but most importantly, nobody should use chemical drain cleaners to open them up. They are among the most hazardous class of cleaning products available. Accidental consumption, even the smallest amount, can cause severe damage or death. Inhalation and skin contact can cause damage to the skin, eyes, and lungs. Drain cleaners are another temporary solution because they often end up damaging and corroding drain pipes, making for a bigger mess in the future.

LUBRICANTS AND SOLVENTS:
Problem: Each year millions of gallons of acids, solvents, oils, greases and hydraulic fluids find their way into the environment. They take many years to biodegrade and are highly toxic to human and aquatic life. Petroleum-based lubricants like WD-40 are referred to as “total-loss lubricants”, meaning the lubricant liquids and vapors expel directly into the environment. Most total-loss lubricants are labeled “Harmful/Fatal When Swallowed” because of Federal Regulations and OSHA requirements for hazardous chemicals.

Problem: Optical Brighteners, dyes, synthetic fragrances, petrochemical solvents, carcinogens, high VOC's, are common in many carpet cleaning chemicals. Often, the chemicals used are slow to biodegrade, accumulate over time, react with new chemistry, or biodegrade to more harmful compounds. In a household environment, children, pets, and home occupants crawl, lie, live near, touch, and breathe the leftover residues and fumes. Office and institutional environments require larger quantities due to the traffic flow, placing the health of workers and occupants at risk.

Problem: Most companies prepare their own. This practice makes objective, truthful and accurate statements concerning ingredients and their toxicity less probable.
Biokleen Solutions: Biokleen MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) are prepared by a third party. A company is required by law to list hazardous ingredients. Biokleen does not contain a single ingredient that is required to be listed due to Toxicity, Corrosivity, Flammability, or Reactivity, the four criteria of a hazardous material.
Problem: Many companies dye their products green, make their packages green, use the word “green” or “natural” on their label. Or they dye their product orange to insinuate it's an “orange” cleaner. The term "greenwashing" is used to describe the attempts to fool consumers and end-users into thinking their product is different than conventional cleaners.
Biokleen Solutions: Biokleen is the first household cleaning company to make important steps towards third-party certification. Our Third Party Certification verifies that our ingredients, processes and products are what they say they are…in other words: Truth in Labeling. Our ingredient list, warning statements, batch tickets, and formulas are reviewed by an outside party. Our MSDS sheets are prepared by an outside party as well.
WHAT TO DO:
Problem: Twenty years from now, all cleaning chemicals will be doing what Biokleen is doing today because there will not be any other choice. Most cleaning companies have been slow to adopt sustainable practices.
