Earth Friendliness: Sustainability Tips & Tricks

From the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea to the awe-inspiring wonder of Mount Everest and the Himalayas, our planet is covered in unbelievable sights and places.

It’s one of the reasons Earth Day is so popular. Earth Day takes place on April 22 and engages a billion people from nearly 200 countries as they volunteer and celebrate the planet, making it a healthier and happier place to live.

Now in its fifth decade after starting in Wisconsin in 1970, Earth Day is a great time to volunteer and think outside the box when it comes to thriving sustainability. Biokleen is onboard and here to help. We use natural ingredients and biodegradable formulas to give priority to people, pets, and our planet. Here are a few tips to help everyone do their part to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Waste is piling high

In 2014, Americans threw away about 33.6 million tons of plastic, but less than 10 percent of it was recycled while 15 percent burned up to create electricity or heat, according to the Columbia Climate School.

The amount of plastic waste won’t stop anytime soon, either. The World Economic Forum predicts plastic production will reach nearly 700 million tons by 2036, about double the production in our current environment.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

The Ecology Center reported that if glass and PET bottles were refilled and reused roughly 30 times, the weight of beer and soda container waste would decrease by 73.6 percent.

So how can we keep containers out of landfills to reduce waste? Containers have endless possibilities with a little bit of creativity and imagination.

Food products like an empty spaghetti jar or household items such as a used candle jar can be upcycled (aka reused) instead of recycled. Use these containers time and again for all sorts of cool ideas.

You can use food-safe containers to:

  • Infuse water with your favorite fruit, herbs, and veggies
  • Store grains, beans, pasta, and more
  • Make and store homemade jams, pickles, salsa, and soups
  • Freeze foods for food prep such as fruits, vegetables, and broth

Use other containers to:

  • Craft DIY projects for household décor such as flower vases, coin jars, and light fixtures
  • Organize household essentials such as office supplies, clothing, and different knick-knacks
  • Use for travel necessities such as makeup and toiletries, hair care supplies, and others.
How is Biokleen going green?

Not only do we offer liquid laundry detergents made from 100 percent recycled newspaper or cardboard that you can compost when you’re done, but we also make highly concentrated products so you can wash more using less. Not sure how much laundry detergent to use? Don’t fret. Check out our blog on how to use the proper amount.

One of our most popular products, Bac-Out Stain + Odor Remover, comes in a one-gallon jug that’s perfect for refilling spray bottles. That’s efficient inside and out, as Bac-Out uses a bioactive formula with a unique blend of live enzyme cultures to break down and absorb organic material. It's a more natural way to remove stains, buildup, and stinky odors.

You can also help Mother Nature by mixing your own solution via our gallon of All-Purpose Concentrate, which makes 128 gallons of solution to reduce the amount of plastic used.

Reusing containers and purchasing fewer disposable containers can help reduce the use of natural resources, energy, and materials used to make products. By being conscious of your environmental impact, you can also save money by spending less on unnecessary waste.

Happy Earth Day! Now let’s go celebrate.
